The stadium holds approximately 81,500 fans and has developed a national reputation both for its atmosphere and for the specific entrance ceremony that defines Clemson home games.

The ritual begins at Howard's Rock—a piece of flint taken from Death Valley, California, by former Clemson coach Frank Howard and placed at the top of a hill at the east end zone in 1966. Before every home game, the Clemson team descends from the dressing room at the top of the hill to the stadium floor in a choreographed entrance, with each player rubbing Howard's Rock as they begin the run. The team descends the hill to the field as the crowd builds to maximum noise. It is one of college football's most replicated entrance traditions and one of its most visually distinctive.

The stadium itself sits in a small-town setting—Clemson's campus is isolated from major metropolitan centers—which gives game days an all-consuming quality.
