# Zone Read

## Short Definition

A run play where the quarterback reads an unblocked defensive end and decides whether to hand off inside or keep the ball outside.

## Definition

The zone read is a play where the quarterback takes a direct snap and reads an unblocked defensive end before deciding whether to hand off to the running back or keep the ball himself. The offensive line runs inside zone away from the end, leaving him unblocked. The quarterback watches the end's reaction—if he crashes down to pursue the running back, the quarterback pulls the ball and runs through the vacated outside lane. If the end holds the edge, the quarterback hands off inside.

The beauty of the read is that it blocks ten defenders with five linemen. The unblocked end is accounted for by the quarterback's decision—if he rushes the ball carrier, the quarterback takes his lane; if he holds, the ball carrier takes the inside run. The defense cannot win both gaps without a player in each, and the quarterback's read determines which gap the ball goes to.

The zone read is foundational to spread offenses built around mobile quarterbacks. It removes one defender from the blocking equation and forces every defensive coordinator to assign specific responsibility to the read defender—a designation that creates vulnerability elsewhere in the front.

## Example

"End crashes on the running back—quarterback pulls the ball and takes the edge. Untouched for eight yards. The end made the wrong decision and the read punished him for it. That's the zone read: the defense gave up one gap to stop another and the quarterback took what they gave."

## Common Confusion

Zone read and RPO are related but different. An RPO gives the quarterback a post-snap choice between handing off and throwing a quick pass. A zone read gives the quarterback a post-snap choice between handing off and keeping the ball himself on a run. The zone read is a run-to-run decision; the RPO is a run-to-pass decision.
