# Zone Blitz

## Short Definition

Sends rushers from unexpected positions while traditional pass rushers drop into zone—creating free rushers through misdirection rather than numbers.

## Definition

A zone blitz sends one or more defenders to rush the quarterback from unexpected positions while simultaneously dropping one or more traditional pass rushers into zone coverage. The offense sets its protection against the alignment it sees—typically accounting for defensive linemen and linebackers in their expected rush positions. A zone blitz inverts those expectations: the defensive end drops into the flat, and the linebacker or safety who replaced him is rushing from a gap the protection hasn't identified.

The confusion is the mechanism. A well-executed zone blitz creates a free rusher not because it sends more defenders than the protection can handle—the rush count may be identical to a base four-man rush—but because it sends rushers from positions the protection didn't assign blockers to.

Behind the zone blitz, the defense maintains zone coverage responsibilities rather than playing man. This serves two purposes: it protects against hot routes that blitzes typically create (zone defenders pick up the quick throws that beat man coverage), and it disguises which defenders are rushing until after the snap.

Dom Capers and Dick LeBeau popularized the zone blitz with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1990s, pairing it with a multiple-front defense that made identification even harder for offensive linemen and quarterbacks.

## Example

"Defensive end drops into the flat instead of rushing—the offensive tackle blocks air. The linebacker who was showing coverage rushes from the B-gap untouched. The protection picked up the wrong four defenders. The quarterback has zone coverage behind it, not man—the hot route to the flat finds the end sitting right there."

## Common Confusion

Zone blitz and blitz are used as synonyms. They're structurally opposite. A standard blitz sends extra rushers and reduces coverage—more rushers, fewer defenders in coverage. A zone blitz sends a rusher from an unexpected position while dropping a traditional pass rusher into zone coverage—the rush count can be the same as a base four-man rush, but the source of the rushers is designed to confuse the protection. Zone blitzes are as much about misdirection as pressure.
