## Short Definition

Yards After Catch—the distance a receiver gains by running after completing a reception, measured from the catch point to where the play ends.

## Definition

YAC separates receivers who catch the ball from receivers who do something with it. Two receivers can catch the same ball at the same spot and generate completely different outcomes based on what happens next—the receiver who breaks one tackle and gains 8 more yards after the catch is more valuable in that moment than the receiver who falls immediately.

YAC is shaped by scheme as much as ability. Screen passes, bubble screens, and shallow crossing routes are designed to generate YAC—the receiver catches the ball in space with blockers in front and room to run. Routes like hitches and curls create catch-and-fall situations where YAC is limited by design.

Receiver skill affects YAC through contact balance (not going down on first contact), vision (finding the crease after the catch), and acceleration (getting to full speed quickly after turning upfield). Route runners who generate yards consistently after the catch are among the most valuable receivers in the game.

YAC is a standard NFL tracking stat and has become a key component in receiver evaluation, route effectiveness, and scheme design.

"He caught it at the ten-yard line and didn't go down until the 23. Thirteen yards after the catch. That's the difference between a first down and a touchdown situation."

## Common Confusion

YAC is a descriptive stat, not a skill in isolation. High YAC can reflect receiver ability, but it also reflects scheme design (routes that put receivers in space), blocking quality, and defensive positioning. A receiver's YAC numbers mean something only in context.
