# Y-Cross

## Short Definition

A deep crossing route at 12 to 15 yards run by the tight end or slot receiver, attacking the gap between linebacker zones and deep safeties.

## Definition

The Y-Cross routes the inside receiver on a deep crossing path across the formation. At 12 to 15 yards, he's above the linebackers' zone and below the deep safety—in the void between two layers of zone coverage. Against man coverage, the crossing action creates natural traffic and gives the receiver room to work after the catch.

In the Air Raid, the Y-Cross is typically the tight end running across the formation with the outside receivers clearing deep to stretch the safeties. The combination attacks zone coverage at its seam: if the safety expands to help over the top, the cross is open. If the linebacker tries to carry the cross, the receiver runs right past his drop zone and into empty field.

The route requires a patient quarterback. The Y-Cross develops slowly—the receiver is crossing the entire formation at depth, not breaking quickly like a slant or a flat route. The quarterback has to hold the ball and trust the receiver to come open as he works across the field.

Mike Leach called it his most reliable third-down concept because the route is always open against something. Zone gives it the seam. Man gives it the crossing action. Pressure gives the quarterback a complete underneath option to the flat.

## Example

"Tight end running the Y-Cross—watch him get past the linebackers' drops and settle into the void below the safety. The quarterback has all day and there's nobody between them."

## Common Confusion

The Y-Cross is confused with a simple crossing route or a drag. A drag is a shallow cross at 3 to 5 yards—quick, low, designed for yards after catch. The Y-Cross is deeper (12-15 yards), takes longer to develop, and attacks a different coverage seam.
