## Definition

Wingspan—measured officially as arm length at the combine—is the distance from a player's shoulder to the tip of their outstretched hand. Long wingspan is among the most valued physical traits at several positions: pass rushers use long arms to keep blockers off their body, cornerbacks disrupt receivers at the line, and offensive linemen with long arms strike before defenders can engage their pads.

At the combine, arm length is measured precisely for every prospect. Teams use it as a threshold filter—a defensive end under 33 inches raises concerns regardless of other measurables; an offensive tackle under 34 inches faces similar scrutiny.

At skill positions, longer wingspan expands a player's catch radius. Wingspan references in broadcast appear most when evaluating pass rushers, offensive linemen, and cornerbacks.

## Common Confusion
