# WILL

## Short Definition

The weakside linebacker aligned opposite the formation strength—the most coverage-oriented inside linebacker and the sub-package coverage assignment specialist.

## Definition

The Will is the linebacker on the weak side of the formation—opposite the Sam, away from the tight end or the declared passing strength. In most systems, the Will is the most coverage-oriented of the linebackers: he's on the side with fewer blockers and more space, making him a natural target for coverage assignments.

The Will's gap responsibility varies by front. In most even fronts, he's the A-gap player to the weak side. In odd fronts, he plays a two-gap or reads-and-reacts role. In sub-packages, the Will is often the player who walks out to cover a back or a slot receiver on third down.

The Will and the Sam communicate constantly pre-snap—they identify strength, confirm alignments, and set the front together. The Will's declaration of "weak" or "Will side" is the companion communication to the Sam's strength call.

## Example

"Will is to the weak side but he's walked into the box—they're bringing him on a delayed blitz. The back has to pick him up or the quarterback is going to take a hit."

## Common Confusion

The Will is sometimes confused with the weakside defensive end—they align on the same side but at different levels, with entirely different assignments. The Will is a linebacker at the second level; the weakside end is a down lineman on the line of scrimmage. The Will is also confused with the SAM—both are outside linebackers in some systems, but the Will aligns to the weak side and carries the primary coverage responsibility, while the SAM aligns to strength and is more physically oriented toward run fits.
