# Wide Receiver

## Short Definition

An eligible pass receiver who lines up on the perimeter and runs routes to create separation from defenders.

## Definition

Wide receivers are the primary pass catchers in flag football. They align near the boundary on the outside or in the slot between the outermost receiver and the center, then release at the snap and run their assigned route.

In flag football every offensive player except the center-quarterback is a potential wide receiver—the term describes alignment, not a special eligibility status. A split end aligns wide near the sideline; a slot receiver aligns inside the split end. Both are eligible to catch any forward pass.

Route precision is the most important wide receiver skill in flag football. With no blocking to create separation, the receiver earns every yard through footwork, release technique, and the ability to make clean, decisive breaks at the top of routes.

## Example

"The receiver releases inside off the line, sells the corner route upfield, then snaps back on the comeback at 10 yards. Two yards of separation at the catch point. That's a route run correctly."

## Common Confusion

In flag football every player is an eligible receiver—including the center after they snap the ball. Wide receiver describes where a player lines up before the snap, not their eligibility to catch passes.
