# Wheel Route

## Short Definition

A route starting toward the flat that turns sharply upfield along the sideline—drawing flat defenders forward before threatening the deep outside.

## Definition

The wheel route starts horizontally—a running back swinging to the flat, a slot receiver running an angle toward the sideline—then turns sharply upfield along the sideline to threaten the deep outside zone. The horizontal start draws the flat defender or linebacker forward, then the upfield turn gets behind him.

The wheel works because it stresses two coverage levels with one route. A linebacker who commits to the flat loses the wheel once it turns upfield. A corner playing deep has to come forward to stop the flat action, creating a window behind him when the route turns vertical. A coverage that doesn't pass the wheel from one defender to another at the turn point allows the route to run through the seam between their responsibilities.

Wheel routes from running backs are particularly effective against linebackers in man coverage who aren't equipped to run with receivers in the deep outside. The back sells the flat route to draw the linebacker forward, then turns upfield past him.

## Example

"Running back swings to the flat—linebacker commits forward to take it away. The back turns the corner and heads upfield along the sideline. The linebacker is five yards behind him and can't recover. The safety was covering deep middle. Nobody's home outside."

## Common Confusion

Wheel route and swing route are used interchangeably but describe different paths. A swing route stays flat—it's a horizontal throw to the flat without the upfield turn. A wheel starts flat or on an angle, then turns upfield along the sideline. The wheel threatens the deep outside; the swing stays short. The turn upfield is what defines the wheel.
