# Wham

## Short Definition

A scheme where an H-back or tight end kicks out an unblocked down lineman—typically paired with inside zone or read-option as a built-in constraint.

## Definition

Wham is a blocking scheme in which an H-back, tight end, or fullback inserts inside the formation to kick out or down-block a defensive lineman who has been deliberately left unblocked by the offensive line. The offensive linemen step away from the defender, inviting him to penetrate into the backfield—and then the inserting blocker arrives from the inside or outside to block him at the moment of penetration, turning his aggression against him.

The scheme is most commonly paired with inside zone, outside zone, and read-option concepts. In a zone-wham combination, the offensive line executes its normal zone blocking rules while the H-back or tight end inserts to account for a specific defender who the zone scheme would otherwise have to handle awkwardly—often a 3-technique or 4i-technique player in an inside gap. The wham block handles that defender without disrupting the line's zone assignments.

In read-option contexts, the wham block creates a new constraint. If the defense assigns a linebacker to chase the quarterback on the keep option, the wham blocker can insert to kick that linebacker out while the linemen zone-block on the handoff side. This gives the offense a built-in answer to an aggressive run defender without changing the base play.

The term comes from the physical nature of the block—the inserting blocker arrives at the defender from an unexpected angle with force, exploiting the defender's forward momentum. A defensive lineman who has penetrated upfield is momentarily off-balance and moving toward the offense, making him easier to redirect or knock aside than one who is set and reading.

## Example

"The tackle deliberately leaves the three-tech unblocked. The H-back inserts inside and kicks him out. The defensive lineman had no idea it was coming—he was expecting to be blocked by the tackle. That's the wham—using his penetration against him."

## Common Confusion

Wham describes the blocking assignment, not the run concept itself. A wham block is performed by an H-back, tight end, or fullback who inserts inside to kick out or down-block a defensive lineman the offensive linemen have deliberately left unblocked. The run that uses a wham block can be inside zone, outside zone, a power variant, or a read-option play—wham describes who does the blocking and how, not which gap the play attacks.
