# Void Year

## Short Definition

A non-playing contract year that extends signing bonus proration to reduce current cap hits—creating a dead cap charge when the void year triggers as scheduled.

## Definition

A void year is a contract year that automatically voids—terminates—after a specified date, typically March 20th of the league year following the last real playing year. Void years are not real contract years in any football sense; they are accounting mechanisms that extend the proration window for signing bonuses without committing the team to actual playing time or the player to actual service.

The purpose is cap management. Signing bonuses must be prorated across contract years up to a maximum of five. By adding void years to a contract, a team can spread the bonus proration across more years, reducing the per-season cap hit during the real playing years. A $30M signing bonus on a two-year deal costs $15M per year; the same bonus on a two-year deal with three void years costs $6M per year during the playing seasons.

The catch is that void years create future dead cap obligations. When the void year triggers—typically because the player was released or the year voided as scheduled—all remaining prorated bonus money accelerates and counts against the cap in the current league year. This is why teams that aggressively use void years face significant dead cap charges in years following large contracts.

Void years became common after the 2020 season when teams restructured contracts during the COVID year and again as a tool to manage the salary cap surge expected from media rights growth. Analysts tracking team cap situations monitor void year acceleration dates as indicators of when dead cap charges will materialize.

## Example

"Three void years on that deal—it's a two-year contract in reality but the bonus is prorated across five. Lower cap hit now, dead cap bomb when those void years trigger next March."

## Common Confusion

Void years are not real contract years—the player will never play under them. They exist solely to extend the proration window for signing bonuses, reducing the per-year cap hit on paper. When the void years trigger, all remaining prorated bonus money accelerates into the final real year as dead cap. Teams that use many void years are borrowing against future cap space.
