# Veteran

## Short Definition

A player who has completed at least one NFL season, carrying CBA seniority and minimum salary scale increases that distinguish them from rookies.

## Definition

Veteran status in the NFL is defined by accrued seasons under the CBA—each year a player spends at least six regular-season games on a team's active or inactive 53-man roster counts as one accrued season. Players with accrued seasons earn higher minimum salaries on a scale that increases with experience, gain access to unrestricted free agency after four accrued seasons, and accumulate pension and benefit eligibility.

In roster construction, veterans serve different functions than rookies. Veteran minimum contracts are common for depth players and specialists—experienced players who fill roster spots at known, controlled costs without the development risk of unproven talent. Veteran leadership and situational awareness are frequently cited factors when teams pair young players with experienced ones at the same position.

During the draft and free agency periods, teams balance the cost of veterans against the long-term upside of younger players on cheaper rookie contracts. A veteran on a one-year deal often bridges the gap while a drafted player develops—a bridge player at the positional level.

## Example

"They let the starter walk in free agency and drafted his replacement in the second round. They add a veteran on a minimum deal to bridge the gap while the rookie develops."

## Common Confusion

Veteran does not mean old or declining. A player entering his second season is technically a veteran. The label is primarily a CBA and contract designation—it governs minimum salary, free agency eligibility, and waiver priority as much as it describes experience.
