## Definition

The veteran minimum is the CBA-set minimum salary for players with significant accrued NFL seasons—typically four or more—which is substantially higher than the rookie minimum. Veteran minimums increase each year of service and are reset annually as the CBA's salary scales update. A player with six accrued seasons signing a minimum contract earns meaningfully more than a player signing their first NFL deal at minimum.

Veteran minimum contracts are the standard mechanism for teams to add experienced players without committing significant cap space. A team in need of depth at a position can sign a veteran to their minimum deal, getting professional experience at the lowest legal cost. These signings are common throughout the preseason, at roster cutdowns, and at midseason when injuries create needs.

The cap accounting for veteran minimums has a specific nuance: under certain CBA provisions, veterans with four or more accrued seasons who sign for minimum salary carry a reduced cap charge—closer to the rookie minimum rate—because the league absorbs a portion of the incremental cost as a benefit to teams. This makes high-accrual veterans even cheaper in cap terms than their salary suggests.

In rebuild mode or hard cap situations, veteran minimum signings are how teams maintain positional depth without spending meaningful cap space. A minimum-deal receiver or linebacker can contribute meaningfully to a roster while consuming a fraction of the cap that a mid-tier free agent would cost. This is why cap-strapped teams often carry rosters heavy with veterans on minimum deals.
