# Value-Based Drafting

## Definition

Value-based drafting is a philosophy that prioritizes selecting the player who offers the largest gap between his talent grade and the typical cost at his draft position. The goal is surplus value: finding players graded higher than where the market normally places their position, exploiting inefficiencies in how the draft values different positions and prospects.

The philosophy builds on the observation that not all draft positions are priced equally by the market. Running backs consistently go later than their talent grade would suggest compared to quarterbacks. An interior offensive lineman graded as a top-20 talent who falls to 35 because of positional market pricing represents value—the team gets a first-round talent at a second-round cost.

Value-based drafting requires teams to disagree with the market deliberately. A team that drafts value is betting their internal grade is more accurate than the consensus, or that the consensus is systematically mispricing a position. Over time, teams that consistently find surplus value in the draft build deeper, more talented rosters than those paying market rate for each pick.

## Example

"They took a running back in round two who graded as a top-15 talent on their board. Every other team passed because the position doesn't go there. They got first-round talent at a second-round cost. That's value-based drafting—the surplus is the point."

## Common Confusion

Value-based drafting and BPA are often conflated but differ in a meaningful way. BPA selects the highest-graded player regardless of position. Value-based drafting selects the player who offers the greatest surplus between his talent and his expected draft cost—sometimes the same pick, sometimes not, especially when positional market pricing creates inefficiencies.
