# Utility Player

## Short Definition

A flag football athlete proficient at multiple positions—receiver on offense, cornerback or safety on defense, and occasionally as a designated rusher.

## Definition

In 5v5 flag football, roster flexibility is a competitive advantage. A true utility player can: run precise routes and catch consistently on offense; play trail man coverage on defense; function as a designated rusher; and recognize coverage shells.

The most valued athletes in 5v5 flag are not necessarily the most skilled at a single role—they are the most versatile, allowing the team to adapt without weak spots.

## Example

"She started the drive as a corner, shifted to rusher on third down, and came back as a receiver on the next series. That's what wins flag football games."

## Common Confusion

Treating 'utility player' as a synonym for 'backup.' Elite utility players are first-rotation athletes specifically developed for multi-position proficiency.
