# Unrestricted Free Agent

## Short Definition

A player with four or more accrued seasons and an expired contract—free to sign with any team with no compensation owed to their former team.

## Definition

An unrestricted free agent is a player with four or more accrued NFL seasons whose contract has expired, giving them the right to sign with any team without compensation to their former team. Unrestricted free agency is the closest thing to a true open market in the NFL—the player and their agent can negotiate with all 32 teams simultaneously, creating competitive bidding for their services.

The NFL's free agency period officially opens in mid-March each year, though a negotiating window opens two days prior allowing teams and agents to discuss terms before deals are signed. The days immediately following the opening of the window—often called the legal tampering period followed by the first day of the new league year—are when the highest-profile signings occur as teams compete for marquee free agents.

Unrestricted free agency is where market value gets set for positions. The largest contracts signed during free agency establish the new benchmarks for that position—a wide receiver signing for $25M per year sets a floor for other top receivers negotiating extensions. Teams and agents track these signings obsessively as comparable contracts for their own negotiations.

Veteran players who have been franchise-tagged multiple times or who have never reached a long-term deal often seek unrestricted free agency as their highest-leverage moment. The combination of full market access, competitive bidding, and no restriction on which teams can negotiate creates the conditions for maximum contract value, particularly for players at premium positions.

## Example

"Four accrued seasons, contract expired—he's an unrestricted free agent. All 32 teams can call his agent today. That's the open market, and he's going to get paid."

## Common Confusion

Not every player whose contract expires becomes an unrestricted free agent. Players with fewer than four accrued seasons enter restricted free agency, where their original team retains matching rights. Accrued seasons—not years in the league—determine free agency status. A player who spent a season on the practice squad may not have accrued a full season under CBA rules.
