## Definition

Under is a post-snap coverage adjustment that converts defenders to three-deep zone principles when receivers break inside. When a receiver who was being played with outside leverage runs an inside route—a slant, a crossing route, a dig—the Under call tells the defender to let the receiver go inside and hold his outside zone responsibility rather than following the route into traffic.

The conversion protects against inside crossing concepts that create natural picks and traffic in man coverage. Rather than fighting through traffic to follow a receiver across the formation, the Under-converting defender holds outside position and lets the inside defender or zone player pick up the crossing route.

Under is used in hybrid man-zone structures where the defense wants the leverage benefits of man coverage but the pick-protection of zone principles against specific route combinations.

## Example

"Corner is in man on #1—receiver breaks inside on a dig route. Under call: corner doesn't follow inside. He holds his outside zone. The linebacker underneath picks up the dig. No collision, no picked defender, no free release."

Under is confused with a specific coverage or a pre-snap alignment.
