# Undrafted Free Agent

## Short Definition

A player who goes unclaimed in the entire NFL Draft and signs with a team as a free agent immediately after—some UDFAs develop into significant contributors.

## Definition

An undrafted free agent is a player who completes the entire seven-round draft without being selected and then signs with a team as a free agent. The UDFA signing period begins immediately after the draft concludes, and the most coveted undrafted players are contacted by multiple teams simultaneously—sometimes within seconds of the final pick.

UDFA signings are a significant part of every team's post-draft roster building. Teams sign 15 to 20 undrafted players each year, and while most don't make the 53-man roster, some develop into long-term contributors. Every roster has at least a few players who came in undrafted—the distinction between a late-round pick and a UDFA is often thin.

Why do players go undrafted? Concerns that appeared in the evaluation process—medical flags, limited athleticism, scheme-specific skills, character issues—can push a player out of the drafted range entirely. Some players simply fall through the cracks of large draft classes. Being undrafted is a setback, not a verdict.

## Example

"Draft ends. Phones start ringing for the undrafted guys before the broadcast is over. A receiver who ran a 4.32 but played at a small school gets four calls in thirty seconds. He picks the team with the best depth chart situation. That's the UDFA market."

## Common Confusion

UDFAs and late-round picks are both depth signings, but UDFAs have no guaranteed roster spot—they sign as free agents and compete for a roster spot in training camp. A seventh-round pick has a contract and a place on the 90-man roster with some guaranteed money. A UDFA has neither until they earn it through camp competition.
