# Two-High Shell

## Short Definition

Pre-snap alignment with two safeties split deep, indicating two-high coverage—most commonly Cover 2 or Cover 4—with the middle of the field open.

## Definition

The two-high shell shows two safeties split deep before the snap—one near each hash, with the middle of the field open between them. No single safety occupies the deep middle. This pre-snap alignment tells the quarterback he's seeing MOFO (Middle of Field Open) coverage, most likely Cover 2 or Cover 4.

For the offense, two-high is a structural signal. Cover 2 leaves the deep seam and the deep corners vulnerable. Cover 4 protects deep but can be attacked with intermediate crossing combinations. Identifying which two-high coverage the defense is running—before or after the snap—shapes which concepts the offense attacks.

From a run-support standpoint, two-high shells are generally less aggressive than single-high structures. Both safeties start at depth, which means neither is immediately available to fill the alley or support the edge on run plays. Defenses that commit to two-high accept this tradeoff in exchange for deep coverage integrity.

Two-high shells enable coverage disguise. A defense aligned in two-high can rotate post-snap to single-high—a safety rotates to the middle, converting to Cover 3 or Cover 1. This post-snap rotation is one of the most common quarterback deceptions in football.

## Example

"Two safeties split pre-snap—two-high shell. The quarterback reads MOFO, expects Cover 2 or Cover 4. He checks his seam combination. At the snap, one safety rotates to the middle. It was Cover 3 disguised behind the two-high look. The read was right; the coverage wasn't what it appeared."

## Common Confusion

Two-high shell and Cover 2 aren't synonymous. Two-high describes the pre-snap safety alignment. Cover 2, Cover 4, and Tampa 2 are all two-high coverages. The shell is the pre-snap read the quarterback makes; the coverage is what the defense executes behind it—and defenses disguise by showing two-high and rotating to single-high post-snap.
