# Two-Gap

## Short Definition

A defensive line technique where the lineman controls two gaps by engaging and reading through his blocker—the foundation of 3-4 interior gap control.

## Definition

Two-gap technique assigns a defensive lineman responsibility for controlling both gaps on either side of the blocker he's engaging. Rather than attacking one gap and penetrating, the two-gap lineman takes on his blocker, controls him, and keeps his eyes on the backfield to react to the run wherever it goes.

The technique requires strength and leverage rather than speed. A two-gap defender has to hold his ground, neutralize the block, and shed to either side when the run direction declares. He can't rely on quickness or inside moves to create penetration—the goal is control, not disruption.

Two-gap fronts are foundational to 3-4 base defenses where three linemen account for all six interior gaps. The nose tackle controls the two A-gaps, and both defensive ends control the B and C gaps on each side. Linebackers play clean behind a front that has every gap covered before they have to move.

The weakness is the drive block. A blocker who gets a clean angle on a two-gap defender and moves him off the line seals him away from both gaps simultaneously. One-gap penetrators win by speed; two-gap defenders win by anchor strength and lateral quickness off the block.

## Example

"Nose tackle takes on the center in two-gap technique—controls him, reads the backfield. Run goes left, nose sheds the block and pursues. Run goes right, he sheds the other way. One defender, two gaps, the blocker's movement tells him which."

## Common Confusion

Two-gap and one-gap describe different defensive line responsibilities. A one-gap defender attacks a single gap—penetrating to create disruption. A two-gap defender controls two gaps by engaging his blocker and reading through him. One-gap creates penetration; two-gap creates gap integrity.
