## Definition

A tweener is a prospect who does not fit cleanly into a traditional positional category—too small for one role, too large for another. The most common scenario involves defensive players too small to play tackle against the run but lacking the bend or speed to win as a traditional EDGE rusher.

Other common situations: a linebacker too slow to match running backs in space; a safety too small for the box but lacking range for deep coverage; a receiver too large for the slot but unable to separate outside.

Tweeners present evaluation risk because there is no obvious position of best fit. Teams that correctly identify how to deploy tweener talent—or build scheme around their actual strengths—turn what looks like a liability into a competitive advantage.

## Example

"255 pounds—light for a three-tech, heavy for most EDGE roles. Classic tweener. The team that takes him needs to already know exactly how they plan to use him."

## Common Confusion

Tweener is not automatically a criticism. Some tweeners become elite players in hybrid roles—modern defenses actively create positions for players who defy categories. The real concern is whether the player handles both roles adequately. If yes, the label becomes a selling point.
