# Turnover

## Short Definition

A possession change during a live play—via interception, fumble recovery, or failure to convert on fourth down—one of football's most decisive play categories.

## Definition

A turnover transfers possession from the offense to the defense during or at the end of a series without the normal expiration of downs through a punt or score. There are three types: an interception, in which a defender catches a forward pass; a fumble recovery, in which any player from either team recovers a ball the ball carrier has lost possession of; and a turnover on downs, in which the offense fails to reach the line to gain on fourth down and the defense takes possession at the spot. Each type transfers possession immediately and begins a new offensive series for the team that gained possession.

Turnover differential—the difference between turnovers created and turnovers committed over the course of a game—is one of the strongest predictors of game outcomes in football. Teams that finish with a positive turnover differential win the majority of their games; teams with negative differentials lose the majority of theirs. The causal mechanism is field position and possession count: a turnover simultaneously denies the offending team's possession and grants the benefiting team a possession, producing a two-possession swing that compounds with favorable field position when the turnover occurs in the opponent's territory.

The expected points swing from a turnover depends on field position. An interception at the opponent's 30-yard line that the defense returns to midfield produces a roughly four to five expected point swing—the offense loses the scoring probability it had built and the defense gains the scoring probability of a first down at midfield. An interception in the offense's own territory is less damaging in raw expected points but equally damaging in momentum and possession count.

Turnover rate is more predictive of future performance when adjusted for opponent quality and game state. Teams that generate turnovers consistently—through well-designed pressure schemes, disciplined coverage, and defenders who locate the ball on contact—sustain the advantage. Teams that generate turnovers through fortunate bounces regress toward the mean. The distinction between forced and unforced turnovers is one of the primary inputs in analytical team evaluation.

"Interception returned to midfield. That play did two things simultaneously: it took away the offense's possession and gave the defense one starting at the 45-yard line instead of their own 20. That's the turnover's double impact—not just the yards, the entire possession exchange."

## Common Confusion

A turnover on downs is not a penalty—it is the natural result of the offense failing to advance the ball far enough within their allotted downs. The offense simply runs out of opportunities and the defense takes over at the spot of the last play. No flag is thrown; no yardage is marched off.
