A possession change when the offense fails to convert on fourth down without kicking—the defense takes over at the spot of the failed play.

## Definition

A turnover on downs occurs when the offense fails to gain the required yardage on fourth down without attempting a kick. The defense takes possession at the spot where the play ended. Unlike a punt, which surrenders possession voluntarily for field position, a turnover on downs gives the opponent the ball exactly where the offense ran out of attempts—often in unfavorable field position for the defense that just held.

The decision to go for it on fourth down rather than punt is one of the most consequential in football. A successful conversion keeps the drive alive. A failed conversion gives the opponent the ball at the offense's current field position—which may be midfield or in their own territory after a long drive that stalled.

Modern analytics have shifted fourth-down decision-making significantly. Expected points calculations show that going for it on fourth and short from many field positions is the mathematically correct choice more often than conventional coaching suggests. Teams that adopt aggressive fourth-down strategies accept more turnovers on downs in exchange for more first downs and touchdowns on converted attempts.

## Example

"Fourth and two at the 42—they go for it instead of punting. Run up the middle, stopped for one yard. Turnover on downs. The opponent takes over at their own 41. That's the risk of fourth-down aggression: a failed conversion hands the opponent favorable field position."

## Common Confusion

Turnover on downs and a regular turnover are different outcomes. A regular turnover—interception or fumble recovery—occurs during a live play. A turnover on downs is a deliberate, by-the-rules possession change that happens when the offense fails to convert on fourth down and doesn't attempt a punt or field goal. It's the consequences of a calculated decision, not a defensive play. The defense doesn't take it—the rules give it to them.
