# TULSA

## Short Definition

A man-coverage exchange on a tight end based on his release direction—inside release goes to the inside defender, outside release goes to the outside defender.

## Definition

TULSA is a man-coverage exchange technique between two defenders sharing responsibility for a tight end, assigning coverage based on the tight end's release direction off the line of scrimmage. If the tight end releases inside, the inside defender takes him. If he releases outside, the outside defender takes him. The release direction is the trigger—no mid-route switching.

The technique addresses the coverage challenge tight ends create at the line of scrimmage. A tight end who can release cleanly inside or outside puts a single defender in a leverage conflict before the route develops. TULSA eliminates that conflict by pre-assigning the exchange rule: the defender with the leverage advantage based on release direction always takes the coverage.

TULSA is typically deployed with a linebacker or safety inside and a defensive end or linebacker outside. The two defenders communicate the call pre-snap and execute the exchange automatically at the snap.

## Example

"TULSA on the tight end—linebacker inside, safety outside. Tight end releases inside at the snap. Linebacker takes him immediately. Safety holds outside. Clean exchange, no miscommunication, and the defender with the better angle has the coverage."

## Common Confusion

TULSA and DALLAS are the same concept applied to different positions. DALLAS is the in/out exchange technique applied to slot receivers. TULSA applies the same release-direction trigger to tight ends. The mechanism is identical—inside release goes to the inside defender, outside release goes to the outside defender—but the alignment and personnel differ.
