## Definition

The trap is a run play that deliberately leaves an interior defender unblocked at the snap, inviting him to penetrate into the backfield, then blocks him from the side with a pulling guard before he can make the tackle. The defender's own aggression becomes the mechanism that defeats him—a defender who reads the initial uncovered gap and fires through it arrives at exactly the wrong angle to handle the pulling blocker coming from the opposite side.

The trap is most effective against penetrating defensive tackles who attack on the snap and read gaps aggressively. A disciplined defender who reads the pulling guard before committing is less vulnerable; a downhill attacker who fires the gap is exactly the target the play is designed to use.

The ball carrier hits the trap hole immediately after the collision—the pulling guard's block creates a lane at the point of attack, and the runner reads the block and accelerates through. Trap works especially well against stunting defenses because the defensive movement designed to create gaps in the protection creates the exact angles the pulling guard can exploit.

## Example

"3-tech fires through the A-gap—nobody blocks him at the snap. He's already a step into the backfield when the pulling guard gets there from the other side. Guard kicks him out. Runner hits the lane behind the collision. Trap: the defender's aggression created his own problem."

## Common Confusion

Trap and counter both use misdirection and pulling linemen. A counter pulls a guard and a tackle and attacks away from the initial backfield action. A trap pulls a guard to block an interior defender who was left unblocked at the snap—the defender is invited to penetrate, then blocked from the side. The trap's key mechanic is the deliberate initial free release of the defender being trapped.
