# Trait vs. Production

## Short Definition

The scouting debate between trusting physical tools that project NFL success versus proven college production—both matter but they don't always align.

## Definition

Trait vs. production is the central tension in prospect evaluation—the question of whether to trust what a player's physical attributes project him to become at the NFL level, or what he has already proven he can do against college competition. Scouts who weight traits draft the ceiling; scouts who weight production draft the floor.

A prospect with elite traits and limited production forces evaluators to diagnose why. Was production limited by teammates, competition level, scheme, or injury? If the answer is context, the traits may be the better signal. If the answer is that the prospect couldn't execute against good competition even with the physical tools to do so, the traits are less valuable.

A prospect with excellent production and modest traits raises the opposite question. Did he succeed because the competition was weak? Can the production translate without the physical attributes NFL defenses demand? Some production-based prospects become elite NFL players by maximizing technique and intelligence. Others hit a ceiling the traits predicted.

## Example

"Two receivers. One has first-round traits and 40 catches in two years. One has third-round traits and 110 catches each of the last three years. Which one do you trust? That's the trait vs. production question. The answer depends entirely on why the gap exists."

## Common Confusion

Traits and production aren't mutually exclusive—the best prospects have both. The debate arises when they diverge: a player with elite traits and limited production, or a player with modest traits and outstanding production. Neither is automatically the right pick. The evaluation requires understanding why the gap exists.
