## Definition

Training camp is the preseason period—typically July through mid-August—when NFL teams gather their entire roster for daily practices, scheme installation, and roster competition before regular season play begins. Teams hold camp either at their home facility or at a separate training location, and the NFL mandates reporting dates and practice structures through the CBA.

Training camp has distinct cultural layers for different stakeholders. For players, it is the most physically demanding stretch of the year—twice-daily practices in summer heat, intense competition for roster spots, and the looming knowledge that cuts are coming. For coaches, it is the primary window to install an offense and defense without game film from opponents, to evaluate players outside of schemes they already know, and to make roster decisions that will define the season. For fans, training camp is the annual ritual marking football's return—practices are often open to the public, creating a unique access point where fans watch their team up close and interact with players in ways impossible during the season.

The practice structure has changed significantly since the current CBA. Contact rules limit full-speed tackling in camp, reducing the physicality that defined the training camps of earlier eras but also reducing the injury frequency that once made multi-week absences routine. Veterans and star players sometimes negotiate exemptions from certain camp practices as a condition of long-term contracts.

Training camp storylines—the emerging backup, the veteran fighting for his job, the first-round pick's adjustment to the NFL—provide months of media content before a single game is played.
