## Definition

Trade value is the relative worth of a fantasy player in trade negotiations—how much another manager would give up to acquire them. It is determined by projected points, positional scarcity, remaining schedule, injury status, contract situation in dynasty leagues, and current performance trajectory. Trade value is a market price negotiated between two managers, not a fixed number.

Trade value fluctuates weekly with real-world news. An injury to a teammate that increases a player's role raises trade value; a bad game after a string of strong performances might create a sell-high opportunity before the market reprices. The skill in trading is identifying mismatches between what a player is worth and what the market currently believes—buying low and selling high relative to the other manager's perception.

Third-party trade value charts—published by fantasy sites and analysts—assign numerical values to every relevant player as a negotiation starting point. These charts are guides, not gospel; a player's value in your specific league depends on scoring format, league size, roster construction, and the specific needs of the managers involved. A tight end is worth more in a format with premium TE scoring than in standard leagues.

In dynasty leagues, trade value extends years into the future and incorporates age curves, contract situations, and depth chart projections. A 22-year-old receiver with an upward trajectory has higher dynasty trade value than a 30-year-old at peak production, even if the veteran scores more points this season.

## Common Confusion

Trade value reflects market worth in negotiations—not projected points alone. A player with declining trade value may still project well this season but is being sold before age, injury history, or upcoming schedule catches up with the market's perception.
