Moving to an earlier draft position by sending picks to a team selecting ahead—acquiring a higher pick at the cost of current or future draft capital.

## Definition

A trade up is when a team moves to an earlier draft position by sending picks to the team currently holding that selection. The acquiring team gives up current or future draft capital to get the higher pick—typically because a specific player they want might not be available if they wait.

The calculus behind a trade up involves certainty versus cost. Trading up pays a premium to guarantee a specific player; staying put risks that player being selected before your original pick. The premium is worth paying when the player is significantly more valuable to your team than what remains on the board at your natural pick position.

Trade ups are most common at the top of the first round for quarterbacks, where teams with older starters or glaring needs at the position pay significant capital to ensure they land their target. The accepted cost is multiple future picks—typically two firsts and sometimes additional assets—for a single guaranteed selection.

## Example

"They were picking 12th with their quarterback of ten years about to retire. The team at 3 had no need for a quarterback. Trade: a first this year, a first next year, and a third. They moved up nine spots and got their guy. That's a trade up."

## Common Confusion

Trading up and overpaying are not the same thing. A trade up is a strategic move; overpaying is an evaluation of whether the cost was worth it. A team can trade up efficiently—paying fair market value per trade charts—or inefficiently. The trade up itself is the mechanism; the cost-benefit analysis is a separate judgment.
