# Trade Down

## Short Definition

Moving to a later draft position in exchange for additional picks—converting a single high pick into volume of draft capital from a team trading up.

## Definition

A trade down is moving to a later draft position in exchange for additional picks from a team that wants to move up. The team trading down accepts a lower selection point and receives extra current or future picks as compensation—converting a single high pick into volume of lower picks.

Trade downs are executed when a team believes the player available at their current pick is not worth the concentrated value of that pick, or when multiple teams ahead of a sought-after prospect are willing to pay to move up. A team picking fifth overall with no strong preference for any specific top-five player might find that trading back to 14 while collecting two additional picks is better than using the fifth pick on whoever happens to be available.

The risk of a trade down is missing a player who was available at the original position. Teams that trade down too aggressively slide past legitimate targets, and the additional picks collected rarely have the same combined value as the pick surrendered if those targets succeed.

## Example

"They held the seventh pick but no one they loved was projected there. A quarterback-needy team offered their 15th, a second, and a third to move up. They took it. Trading down replenished their draft capital and they still got their target at 15."

## Common Confusion

Trading down and giving up don't mean the same thing. A team that trades down isn't necessarily less aggressive—they're converting one high pick into multiple picks because they don't have a specific player who merits the concentrated investment. If no one at your pick grade is clearly worth it, accumulating picks is the rational choice.
