# Touchback

## Short Definition

A ruling that places the ball at a designated spot after it becomes dead in the end zone under certain conditions.

## Definition

A touchback occurs when the ball becomes dead in the end zone under specific conditions—most commonly on a kickoff that lands in or through the end zone, a punt that rolls into the end zone untouched, or a ball that goes out of bounds through the back of the end zone. The result is that the receiving team gets the ball at their own 25-yard line with a first down.

Touchbacks are the most common outcome on kickoffs in modern football. Kickers are instructed to kick deep specifically to force touchbacks and prevent returns, which eliminates the field position risk of a long return. Return teams still choose to return kicks that land short of the end zone or near the goal line.

On punts, a touchback gives the receiving team the ball at the 20-yard line—which is worse field position than a fair catch near midfield but better than a downed punt at the 5. Punt coverage teams try to pin the ball inside the 20 without creating a touchback.

## Example

"The kick sails through the end zone—touchback. Ball at the 25. The kicker did his job. No return risk, decent starting field position, offense takes over. That's the modern kickoff strategy in one play."

## Common Confusion

Touchback and safety are confused because both involve the ball going into or being downed in the end zone. A touchback gives the offense possession at the 25-yard line—the ball went into the offense's end zone and they didn't return it. A safety scores two points for the defense when the offense is downed in their own end zone with the ball. The key difference is possession and who put the ball there.
