## Definition

Touch share measures the percentage of a team's combined rushing attempts and receptions a specific player accounts for. A running back who handles 18 of a team's 30 total running back touches in a game has a 60% touch share at the position. It is the primary measure of backfield opportunity and role clarity—how much of the offense runs through a specific player.

Touch share is the running back equivalent of target share for receivers. Volume drives production in fantasy football, and touch share quantifies that volume directly. A back with a consistent 60%+ touch share in a productive offense is a reliable fantasy asset; one fighting for touches in a committee is unpredictable regardless of per-carry efficiency.

Tracking touch share changes identifies role shifts before they fully appear in box scores. If a running back drops from 65% to 40% touch share over three weeks, a usage change is underway—injury, scheme adjustment, or emerging competition—and fantasy value should be adjusted accordingly. Conversely, a back whose touch share climbs following an injury to a teammate is an immediate add.

In game scripts, touch share fluctuates by situation. Teams that build leads run the ball heavily in the second half, inflating touch share for favored teams' backs. Teams trailing pass more frequently, reducing back touch share but potentially increasing reception targets. Game script awareness adjusts the meaning of touch share projections based on expected score environment.

"He's handling 22 touches a game—65% of the backfield share. In a run-heavy offense, that volume is the whole story. Efficiency matters less when you're getting that many opportunities."

## Common Confusion

Touch share counts rushes and receptions combined—not just carries. A running back with 12 carries and 6 receptions has 18 touches. In PPR leagues, the receptions are worth as much or more than extra carries, so a back with a lower carry count but high reception total may have a higher fantasy value than his touch share percentage suggests without accounting for the scoring format.
