The first defender presses the on-line receiver immediately at the snap—disrupting his release and preventing him from setting a clean pick. The second defender plays off the off-line receiver, giving himself space to react to the route that develops. The technique solves the coverage problem stacks create. Two defenders trying to press two tightly aligned receivers will collide and create the traffic the offense designed. TOP HAT separates the problem: one defender jams the release point, one defender plays the space. Together they cover both routes without creating the congestion that gives the stack its advantage. The on-line defender's press disruption is the key. If he gets a clean jam on the first receiver, the timing of the entire route combination breaks down before the off-line receiver's route can develop. ## Example "Stack formation—TOP HAT.
