# Tite Front

## Short Definition

A defensive front with a 0-tech nose tackle and two 4i-tech defensive ends, placing a down lineman in every interior gap.

## Definition

The Tite front puts a 0-tech nose tackle over the center and both defensive ends in 4i technique—on the inside shoulder of each offensive tackle. Every interior gap from the A-gap to the B-gap on both sides has a down lineman assigned to it before the snap. The offense cannot release the center or guards to the second level without first defeating a body in their gap.

The Tite is built for gap integrity. Interior zone runs, power plays, and quarterback sneaks all run into a wall—there are no uncovered gaps for the offense to exploit. Linebackers behind the Tite front play clean and fast because they're not fighting through blocks to reach the ball carrier.

In modern defenses, the Tite is often used with quarters coverage or pattern-matching rather than heavy pressure. The front handles the run; the back end handles the pass. This makes the Tite more versatile than the Bear front it resembles structurally.

## Example

"Tite front—nose in 0-tech, both ends in 4i. Look at the interior: every gap is covered before the snap. The offense tries inside zone but there's no crease anywhere. The back has to bounce it, and that's where the linebackers are waiting."

## Common Confusion

Tite Front and Bear Front describe nearly identical alignments. The Bear front is the traditional name—associated with Buddy Ryan's 46 defense—and carries historical connotations of heavy pressure and man coverage. Tite is the modern Saban-tree label for the same structural alignment, often paired with quarters coverage and pattern-matching rather than the aggressive man coverage the original Bear implied.
