# Technique Numbers

## Short Definition

The numbered alignment system describing where a defensive lineman lines up relative to an offensive lineman—from 0-tech on the nose to 9-tech on the wide edge.

## Definition

Technique numbers are the standardized system describing where a defensive lineman or linebacker aligns relative to the adjacent offensive lineman before the snap. The numbers run from 0 (head-up on the center) outward in both directions, using odd numbers for inside-shade alignments and even numbers for head-up alignments, with modifications like "i" (inside shade) to specify which shoulder the defender is on. The system gives coaches a universal shorthand for describing defensive alignments without drawing diagrams.

The core technique numbers: 0-technique aligns head-up on the center. 1-technique aligns on the inside shoulder of the guard (A-gap side). 2-technique aligns head-up on the guard. 2i aligns on the inside shoulder of the guard. 3-technique aligns on the outside shoulder of the guard (B-gap side). 4-technique aligns head-up on the tackle. 4i aligns on the inside shoulder of the tackle (B-gap side). 5-technique aligns on the outside shoulder of the tackle (C-gap side). 6-technique aligns head-up on the tight end. 7-technique aligns on the inside shoulder of the tight end. 9-technique aligns outside the tight end on the edge.

These alignments are directly tied to gap responsibility in most defensive systems. A 3-technique is typically responsible for the B-gap between guard and tackle. A 1-technique is typically responsible for the A-gap between center and guard. A 5-technique is typically responsible for the C-gap outside the tackle. Understanding technique numbers allows a reader to immediately identify where the run defense has strength and where gaps might be vulnerable.

Defensive coordinators describe their fronts using technique numbers. A "4-3 under" front might have a 3-technique on one side and a 1-technique on the other, with specific gap responsibilities built into the front's design. A "3-4" front might have a 0-technique nose tackle and two 5-technique ends, with linebackers responsible for the interior gaps. Reading the techniques in a front gives a complete picture of how the defense intends to stop the run before the play begins.

## Example

"3-technique on the right side, 1-technique on the left. The B-gap on the right is occupied; the A-gap on the left is occupied. If you're running inside zone, you know before the snap where the natural cutback lane is—away from the 3-technique and into the backside A-gap."

## Common Confusion

Technique numbers describe alignment, not assignment. A 3-technique defensive tackle aligned on the outside shoulder of the guard is not automatically assigned to the B-gap—his gap responsibility depends on the defensive front and the play call. The technique number tells you where he lines up; the front tells you where he is supposed to go. A player can be aligned in a 3-technique and have A-gap responsibility on a specific stunt, or B-gap responsibility on a base play. Alignment and assignment are related but distinct.
