## Definition

A teaser is a type of parlay where the bettor moves the point spread or total on each leg by a fixed number of points—typically 6, 6.5, or 7 in football—in exchange for reduced payout odds. A standard two-team, six-point football teaser pays roughly –120 instead of the +260 a normal two-team parlay would pay. The extra points make each leg easier to win; the reduced payout compensates the book.

Teasers require all legs to win, just like regular parlays. The strategic value lies in using the extra points to cross through key numbers—the most common margins of victory in NFL games. Three and seven are the most significant, representing field goals and touchdowns. A teaser that moves a –7 spread to –1 crosses through both 3 and 7, significantly increasing the probability that leg covers.

The "Wong teaser"—a concept popularized by gambling analyst Stanford Wong—identified that two-team six-point teasers with both legs crossing through 3 and 7 historically offered positive expected value at standard book pricing. This specific structure became widely known enough that many books adjusted their teaser payouts to reduce the edge. The underlying principle—that crossing key numbers has outsized value—remains valid.

Teasers are primarily a football product because the discrete scoring structure of football (field goals worth 3, touchdowns worth 7) creates meaningful key numbers. Basketball's fluid scoring and baseball's low scores make teaser-style products less analytically significant in those sports.

## Example

"Six-point teaser—move the Chiefs from –7 to –1, move the Eagles from –3 to +3. Both legs now cross through the key numbers. Smaller payout, much better chance to cash."

## Common Confusion

Moving through key numbers is what makes teasers valuable—not just getting extra points in general. A six-point teaser that moves a –3 spread to +3 crosses through 3 (the most common NFL margin of victory), dramatically improving the probability of covering. Moving from –8 to –2 also crosses through 3 and 7. Moving from –14 to –8 crosses through neither key number and provides much less value.
