# Team Need

## Short Definition

A roster deficiency that shapes a team's draft approach—a position lacking quality starters or depth that the team seeks to address with a pick.

## Definition

Team need describes a specific positional deficiency on a roster that a team seeks to address through the draft. A team with an aging left tackle, no reliable starter at cornerback, or a thin defensive interior has needs at those positions. Needs shape how teams approach their picks, sometimes overriding the board to take a player at a position of urgency.

Need changes throughout the offseason. Free agency signings eliminate some needs while creating or exposing others. A team that signs a veteran cornerback in March may no longer need to address that position in April. Draft preparation requires teams to continuously update their needs list as the roster shifts.

Need-based drafting carries a risk the BPA philosophy tries to avoid: reaching. When teams prioritize a position over the board's player order, they often take players earlier than their talent grade warrants—paying a premium in position to address a need that might have been solvable later. The best teams address needs through free agency and early trades so they can draft talent in April rather than need.

## Example

"Their starting quarterback retired in February. They now have the clearest need in football. Every mock has them taking a quarterback at one overall. The need is so obvious it's driving the entire top of the draft conversation."

## Common Confusion

Team need and positional value are different inputs into the same pick decision. Positional value describes how the NFL market prices different positions—quarterbacks command early picks because of their impact. Team need describes a specific roster deficiency. A team can have a need at a position the market undervalues, or no need at a position the market prices highly. Both factors shape the decision.
