## Definition

Tape—also called film—is the recorded video of a player's games that scouts, coaches, and analysts study to evaluate performance. In draft evaluation, tape is the primary evidence: what a prospect actually did on the field against real competition, studied frame by frame, is the foundation of every credible evaluation.

Scouts and coaches watch tape to assess technique, decision-making, effort, how a player responds to adversity, and whether production came from genuine skill or scheme advantage and weak competition. A prospect who dominated weak conference opponents looks different on tape against Power Four competition—this distinction is why tape study is irreplaceable by statistics alone.

In broadcast language, "the tape" refers to this evidence base. "His tape is elite" means the video record of his play consistently demonstrates high-level performance. "The tape doesn't lie" means observable evidence overrides reputation, measurables, or draft hype.

## Example

"Forget the combine numbers—go watch his tape against Alabama. That's where you find out if the athleticism translates to winning football plays."

## Common Confusion

Tape and film are interchangeable—the terms mean the same thing. The medium changed from actual film to digital video decades ago, but the language never changed. When a coach says "let's watch the tape," he means video.
