## Definition

Tampa 2 starts with the Cover 2 structure—two safeties splitting the deep field, corners walling the flats, linebackers covering the underneath zones. The single adjustment is the middle linebacker: at the snap, he sinks deep into the middle of the field to patrol the seam between the two safeties.

That one change solves Cover 2's most exploitable weakness. The deep middle seam that splits the safeties—the window that four verticals and seam routes attack—is now occupied. The linebacker's depth gives the coverage interior integrity that standard Cover 2 lacks.

The technique demand on the middle linebacker is significant. He has to defeat any blocker in his path, read route combinations quickly, and sink to depth before the ball is released. The position requires a coverage linebacker with genuine athleticism—which is why teams that run Tampa 2 build their linebacker room specifically around that skill set.

The tradeoff is underneath. With the Mike sinking deep, the short and intermediate middle zones have less linebacker presence. An offense that floods underneath with quick flat and hook-curl combinations can find space before the sinking linebacker covers it.

## Example

"Mike linebacker reads pass and sinks immediately at the snap. Watch him: 10 yards deep, then 15, then 18. He's in the seam between the two safeties. Four verticals—the Mike owns the middle one. That's Tampa 2 covering the void that beats base Cover 2."

## Common Confusion

Tampa 2 is sometimes described as a different coverage from Cover 2. It's a variant—the base structure is identical. The single difference is the Mike linebacker's post-snap assignment. Tampa 2 is what happens when a defense solves Cover 2's deep middle seam problem with one player's technique.
