## Definition

A tag-and-trade occurs when a team franchise-tags a player and then immediately negotiates a trade sending that player to another team. The mechanism allows a team to receive draft capital or players in return for a pending free agent they could not retain long-term—rather than simply letting the player walk to free agency at the end of the year, the team converts one year of control into trade compensation.

The mechanics require the player to sign the franchise tender—accepting the one-year guaranteed salary—before the trade can be completed. A player who refuses to sign the tender cannot be traded, because there is no signed contract to transfer. This gives the player leverage: they can block the trade by refusing to sign unless the receiving team commits to a long-term extension as a condition of completing the deal.

Tag-and-trades are strategically significant because the franchise tag prevents a player from entering free agency and negotiating openly with all 32 teams, while the trade allows the original team to recoup value they would otherwise forfeit. For the receiving team, they acquire a known commodity with an immediate contract at the franchise rate and often negotiate a long-term extension simultaneously.

Notable tag-and-trades have reshaped rosters and conference power balances—the trades shift both draft capital and player quality across the league in ways that straightforward free agency cannot.

## Common Confusion

A tag-and-trade is not the same as simply trading a player on a franchise tag. It requires the player's cooperation—a tagged player must agree to sign the franchise tender to complete the transaction. Without a signed tender, the tag is a binding offer, not a tradeable contract. Both the team and player must want the trade for it to work.
