# Sweep

## Short Definition

A designed outside run with blockers—often pulling linemen—leading the ball carrier around the perimeter edge to attack open field beyond the formation.

## Definition

A sweep sends the ball carrier wide to the perimeter with blockers leading the way. The design varies—some sweeps use one or two pulling guards leading around the edge, others use tight end and fullback combination blocks at the point of attack. The common element is a designed outside run with blockers establishing the perimeter lane before the runner arrives.

The sweep attacks the edge of the defense and forces perimeter defenders to set force cleanly or get knocked off the run lane. A sweep that turns the corner puts the ball carrier in open field with pursuit angles—a corner or safety forced to tackle in space after missing contain gives up significant yards.

The sweep's effectiveness depends on the ability to reach and seal the edge defender. If the force player sets and turns the runner back inside into pursuit, the sweep loses its design advantage. Pulling linemen who reach and seal the end give the runner a lane that linebackers can't close in time from the inside.

## Example

"Two guards pull to the right—the runner takes the pitch and follows them to the edge. The first guard seals the end, the second kicks out the cornerback. Runner turns the corner with nothing but open field. That's a sweep working: the blockers reached the edge before the runner and cleared the lane."

## Common Confusion

Sweep and outside zone are different runs even though both attack the perimeter. Outside zone uses zone-blocking principles—every lineman takes a lateral zone step and the runner reads blocks to cut inside or bounce outside. A sweep uses specific individual assignments, often including a pulling lineman or two to lead the run outside. Outside zone is a scheme; sweep is a specific play design.
