## Definition

A stunt is a post-snap movement between two defensive linemen where one player crashes hard to an inside gap while the other loops around to the outside gap the first player vacated. The two defenders exchange responsibilities after the snap, creating misdirection that disrupts the offensive line's blocking assignments.

The mechanics: the crashing defender attacks the gap between two blockers, forcing both to react. The looping defender goes behind him and emerges in the gap the protection didn't expect. If the stunt works, the looping defender arrives in a gap with no blocker assigned to him—a free rusher from a coordinated two-man move.

Stunts are called by gap and direction: a T-E stunt pairs the defensive tackle with the defensive end; an E-T reverses the order. Inside stunts between two tackles can attack the center and both guards simultaneously. The timing of the crash and loop must be precise—the looping defender needs the crash to draw blockers before he emerges in the vacated lane.

Offensive lines practice picking up stunts through communication. A center and guard who communicate the stunt pre-snap can pass off the looping rusher cleanly. A line that doesn't communicate gives up free rushes.

## Example

"T-E stunt—the 3-tech crashes inside at the snap, the end loops around him to the outside. Both guards go to the 3-tech because he's coming at them hard. The end emerges in the C-gap with nobody there. The tackle bit on the crash. Sack. That's a stunt working exactly as designed."

## Common Confusion

Stunt and slant are often used interchangeably but describe different movements. A slant is a single defender angling to an adjacent gap at the snap. A stunt involves two defenders exchanging gaps through coordinated movement—one crashes inside while the other loops around outside. The exchange is the defining feature of a stunt; a slant has no loop or exchange.
