# Strength

## Short Definition

The side of the formation with more surface—used by the defense to set its front, coverage, and run-fit responsibilities before the snap.

## Definition

Strength is the side of the offensive formation with more surface—more eligible receivers, an attached tight end, or more blockers aligned to one side of the center. Defenses declare formation strength before the snap to set their front alignment, coverage responsibilities, and run-fit assignments. Knowing which side is the strong side and which is the weak side tells every defender where to align, where their gaps are, and which coverage responsibilities belong to them.

Declaring strength organizes the entire defensive call. A linebacker's alignment is described as play-side or away from strength. A safety's coverage responsibility might be the strong-side flat or the weak-side deep third. A defensive end's rush lane or contain assignment is set relative to the strong side. Without a declared strength, every defender would need to receive individual gap and coverage instructions on every play—declaring strength converts a complex assignment system into a set of rules that adjust automatically to the formation.

Traditional strength was simple: the tight end side was the strong side, the open side was the weak side. A classic pro-set formation with one tight end declared strength to that side, and the defense's Sam linebacker aligned to the strength while the Will linebacker aligned to the weak side. As formations became more complex—multiple tight ends, no tight ends, unbalanced sets, trips formations—the rules for declaring strength evolved.

Modern defenses use multiple strength declaration systems. Some declare strength by the tight end's alignment when one is present. Some declare by receiver count—the side with more receivers is strength. Some use field and boundary as proxies—field (the wider side) is treated as strength regardless of formation. Some defenses are formation-specific, using different rules for different personnel groupings. The declaration system a defense uses reflects both its philosophical priorities and the offensive systems it most commonly faces.

## Example

"Tight end aligned right—strength is right. Sam linebacker moves to the right, Will linebacker stays weak-side left. Safety rotates toward the tight end. All of that happened from two words: 'strength right.' Every defender knows their assignment without another call."

## Common Confusion

Strength is declared by the offense's formation, not chosen by the defense. The defense identifies strength and aligns to it—it doesn't create it. And strength doesn't always go to the tight end side. In spread formations without a tight end, strength is typically declared to the side with more receivers or to the field (the wider side of the field). A defense that always calls strength to the tight end side will be misaligned against spread formations that don't use one.
