# Steal

## Short Definition

Selecting a prospect significantly later than his consensus grade—getting a player the board valued higher than his actual draft position reflects.

## Definition

A steal is selecting a prospect significantly later than his consensus draft grade—acquiring a player the board valued higher than his actual draft position. The steal label reflects the gap between talent and selection point: a player graded as a first-round talent who falls to the third round because of a medical flag or character concern is a potential steal for the team willing to take on that risk.

Steals are identified in two ways: immediately at the time of selection, when analysts note the board value remaining, and retrospectively, when the player outperforms his draft position on the field. Immediate steals are predictions; retrospective steals are verdicts.

Players fall for reasons. Understanding why a steal was available is as important as celebrating that they were taken. A player who fell due to a correctable issue—scheme fit, injury with full recovery, temporary character concern—is a different risk than one who fell because multiple organizations found significant evaluation red flags.

## Example

"First-round grade on tape. Fell to the fourth because of a knee he had fully repaired. The team that took him got a steal—they were the ones willing to read the medical, confirm the recovery, and take the board value that everyone else left on the table."

## Common Confusion

A steal and a late-round pick are not the same. Any player taken in the late rounds is a late-round pick. A steal is a player whose talent was graded significantly higher than where he was taken—the gap between board grade and selection position is what defines it, not the round itself.
