# Start/Sit

## Short Definition

The weekly decision of which players to activate versus bench—driven by matchup, role, and projected points, where most in-season fantasy value is won or lost.

## Definition

Start/sit refers to the weekly lineup decision of which players to put in active scoring spots versus which to leave on the bench. Every fantasy manager with more eligible players than active lineup spots must make start/sit decisions each week. The player you start scores fantasy points; the player you sit scores nothing for your team regardless of how well they actually perform.

Start/sit decisions are driven by projected points, opponent matchup, injury status, expected role, weather, and variance tolerance. A running back facing the league's worst rush defense in a dome projects higher than the same player facing the top run defense in a blizzard. The same player's start/sit calculus changes week to week based on these variables.

The start/sit decision is where most fantasy points are gained or lost in-season. Drafting well creates opportunity; starting the right players converts opportunity into wins. A manager with an excellent roster who starts the wrong players consistently will underperform a manager with a lesser roster who makes sharper weekly decisions.

Start/sit also drives waiver wire and trade behavior. Adding a player specifically to start them in a favorable matchup—then dropping them after—is called streaming, a specific application of the start/sit principle. Trade negotiations often center on start/sit logic: acquiring players with better upcoming schedules, or selling players before their schedule gets difficult.

## Example

"He's a first-round pick but he's facing the best corner in the league this week in a must-win. The matchup is bad enough to sit him. Start/sit is about this week, not about what you paid for him in August."

## Common Confusion

Start/sit decisions should be made based on projected points and matchup quality—not loyalty to a player drafted highly. Benching a high draft pick for a better matchup is not betrayal; it's correct lineup management. Fantasy managers who can't bench their early picks in bad matchups consistently leave points on the board.
