## Definition

The speed rush in flag football is an aggressive edge-rush technique where the designated rusher attacks the outside shoulder of the quarterback at full speed after crossing the rush line. Rather than mirroring the quarterback's movement, the speed rusher commits to a path and relies on closing speed to arrive before the throw.

The technique works because flag quarterbacks have a limited pocket without offensive linemen protecting them. A rusher who can turn the corner and close from the 7-yard rush line to the quarterback in two to three seconds—before any route has time to develop—collapses the passing window before the quarterback can find an open receiver.

The speed rush is countered by the quarterback stepping away from the rush direction, by a built-in hot route to the side the rusher vacated, or by a quick-game throw that releases in under two seconds before the rusher arrives. A quarterback with good pocket awareness can exploit the speed rusher's commitment by stepping up and away, turning a missed rush into a scramble lane.

The speed rush is most effective against quarterbacks who hold the ball and look downfield, and least effective against quarterbacks who are quick-game specialists or mobile enough to escape the rush direction.

"Speed rush from the right side—rusher hits the edge at full speed, no mirror. Quarterback holds the ball, watching receivers downfield. The rusher turns the corner at 2.2 seconds. Quarterback has nowhere to go right. He scrambles left but the throw is off-platform and falls incomplete. Speed rush created the chaos."

## Common Confusion

Speed rush and mirror rush are different techniques. A mirror rush shadows the quarterback's lateral movement—it's a containment strategy that matches the quarterback's feet rather than attacking. A speed rush attacks a specific edge with full-speed commitment to reach the quarterback, accepting that it's a one-way rush that can be escaped if the quarterback moves away from it.
