# Spacing

## Short Definition

A quick-game concept placing receivers at the same depth across the field, giving the quarterback a pick-the-open-man horizontal read against any coverage.

## Definition

Spacing is built on the impossibility of covering multiple receivers at the same depth across the field with zone defenders who have horizontal responsibilities. Five receivers set at 6 to 8 yards depth across the entire width of the field create more distinct route targets than any zone can cover. The quarterback reads across the field and throws to whoever is open.

The concept is a zone-beater by design. Zone defenders each own a horizontal slice of the field—spacing puts a receiver in every slice simultaneously. The defender can cover his immediate receiver or the receiver entering his zone from another area, but he can't do both. The quarterback finds the defender who is covering two receivers and throws to the one he isn't.

Spacing is a quick-game concept—the routes are short and the reads are fast. The quarterback is taking his first read at three steps and releasing the ball. There's no progression through multiple levels; it's a horizontal scan across a single depth level.

Against man coverage, spacing becomes individual matchup football. The horizontal distribution doesn't create the same zone conflicts because each receiver is individually assigned.

## Example

"Five receivers across the field at the same depth. The quarterback reads left to right and finds the one defender who's covering two routes. The receiver between them is open immediately."

## Common Confusion

Spacing as a concept is confused with spacing as a general principle. Good route trees create appropriate spacing between receivers to avoid congestion—that's a principle. The Spacing concept is a specific quick-game play where receivers distribute horizontally at a common depth.
