# Snap

## Short Definition

The exchange that starts every play—the center delivers the ball to the quarterback to initiate the down.

## Definition

Every play begins with the snap. The center takes position near or over the ball, then delivers it to the quarterback—either by handing it back directly, bouncing it, or tossing it in a shotgun delivery. Once the ball leaves the center's hands, the play is live.

In flag football the shotgun snap is standard. The center flips the ball back to a quarterback standing 3 to 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage, then immediately releases into their assigned route as an eligible receiver. The pass clock begins the moment the ball is snapped.

A bad snap—one that bounces or sails wide—is a live ball. The quarterback must recover it before throwing; if the ball hits the ground untouched, it is not automatically a dead ball.

## Example

"Clean shotgun snap to the quarterback at five yards—she sets, reads the coverage, and releases the ball inside two seconds. The play starts clean and the rest follows."

## Common Confusion

In flag football the center becomes an eligible receiver immediately after snapping the ball. Unlike tackle football where the center stays to block, a flag center releases into a route right after the snap. A bounced or bad snap is a live ball—not a dead ball—until the official blows the whistle.
