A rumor or report deliberately spread by a team to obscure their actual draft intentions and mislead rivals tracking the board before and during the draft.

## Definition

A smokescreen is a rumor, report, or public statement deliberately spread by a team, agent, or player's camp to mislead other franchises about their actual draft intentions. Teams near the top of the board have strong incentives to obscure their real target—if a team's pick is predictable, rival teams can either trade up ahead of them or leverage that information in trade negotiations.

Common smokescreen tactics include: leaking false reports of interest in a player a team has no intention of selecting; expressing public uncertainty about a top prospect to drive his value down or cause a rival to trade up for him; and having agents plant reports that a player prefers to sign with certain teams, influencing where he is picked.

Smokescreens are most active in the week before the draft and accelerate on draft night as teams near their selections. Experienced analysts and reporters learn to discount information that arrives at unusual times or from unusual sources, but the information advantage belongs to the team until the pick is announced. The commissioner reading the card is the only moment the smokescreen fully clears.

"All week they've been saying they love the receiver. Draft night—they take the edge rusher. That was a smokescreen from the start. They never wanted the receiver."

## Common Confusion

Not all pre-draft reports are smokescreens. Some leaks are genuine. The difficulty for broadcast media and analysts is that a smokescreen and real intelligence look identical from the outside—both are "sources say." Teams and players have no incentive to clarify which is which, which is why analysts often hedge draft predictions for players near the top of the board.
