# Smash

## Short Definition

A two-receiver combination to one side pairing an outside hitch with an inside corner route—designed to create a high-low stretch against Cover 2.

## Definition

Smash puts two routes to one side at two different depths and forces the cornerback to choose. The outside receiver runs a hitch at 6 to 8 yards—sitting down in front of the corner. The inside receiver runs a corner route to 15-plus yards, attacking the space behind the corner and in front of the safety.

Against Cover 2, the corner has to choose: stay on the hitch underneath or expand to the corner route over the top. If he stays underneath to take the hitch, the corner route is open. If he expands to take the corner route, the hitch is open. The quarterback reads the corner's movement and throws the opposite route.

The concept works because Cover 2 asks corners to be both flat defenders and deep zone defenders—a genuinely difficult combination. Smash exploits the moment between those two responsibilities.

Against Cover 3 and man coverage, Smash is less effective. In Cover 3 the corner is rotating deep, so there's no conflict to exploit. Against man, both routes become individual matchups without the built-in high-low leverage.

## Example

"Corner route to the hitch—the corner is playing under the hitch and the safety can't get there in time. That's a Smash concept working exactly as designed."

## Common Confusion

Smash is a specific two-receiver concept targeting Cover 2. It's confused with any hitch-corner combination, but the defining element is the high-low read on the cornerback. Without that specific defender as the read key, it's just two routes, not Smash.
